"The Art Of Eight Limbs"

Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) is an ancient martial art practiced and perfected by the people of Thailand. This fighting art is known as the “Art of Eight Limbs" or "The Science of Eight Limbs." Muay Thai has become the national sport of Thailand.

The reason for referring to Muay Thai as "eight limbs" is because the art focuses on heavy use of both hands, feet, knees, and elbows, therefore utilizing eight points of attack, as opposed to just two points (hands) in western boxing, and four points (hands, feet) in other combat sports.

As well as being the national sport of Thailand, Muay Thai is also increasing in popularity around the world due to the sport of Mixed Martial Arts, as more and more fighters are mixing the "Thai Clinch" and other Muay Thai into their MMA techniques. A good recent example of an effective Thai clinch is Anderson Silva winning the UFC middleweight championship from Rich Franklin by using a Thai clinch and vicious knees.

Muay Thai is a sport that requires a tremendous amount of strength, stamina, will-power, and all around toughness. However, there is a sacred spiritual element to Muay Thai for traditional Thai culture.

Traditional Muay Thai that is practiced today, is slight different than it's predecessors like Muay Boran, but I intend for this site to cover as many topics as possible about Thai boxing and and other Thai martial arts. It's still a work in progress, and I imagine it will always be, considering the resurgence of popularity for martial arts and fight sports in recent years.
